Dad is home early. Fuck.
He is never home early. Why is he home early? These are the thoughts my mind is stuck on. I canât even begin to process the amount of trouble Iâm in right now.
Thatâs nothing compared to what happens next though.
It all seems to happen in slow motion. Yet I am unable to do anything about it other than watch the scene in horror.
Dad storms straight over to where Matt is standing and shoves him with seemingly all his weight.
Matt falls to the ground with a crunch upon the gravel. He only turns his gaze away from me at the last second. Too late to save himself.
Dadâs face is an alarming picture of fury. Iâve never seen him so angry. His eyes are glazed over scarily. He looks possessed, even.
âWhat are you doing on my property?!â he yells at Matt. âI told you never to come here again!â
He delivers a kick to Mattâs ribs, causing him to wince in pain.
At this point, I realise I am screaming too. I bang on the glass, begging Dad to stop. Iâm locked inside the house, and I can only watch as my father continues his frenzied attack, delivering various kicks upon a helpless Matt. He rolls over with his arm covering his face. His perfect teeth his father the dentist has invested a lot in are stained red.
âDad, stop!â I scream. Itâs like he canât hear me.
Dad reaches down and takes a fistful of Mattâs hoodie in his hands. âWhy donât you answer me? I told you to stay away from my daughter! You dare to throw stones at her bedroom window in the middle of the night, trying to get her attention. Yes â I know that was you! How dare you come to my house after youâve been warned?â
Matt manages to spit something out along with some blood. Iâm sure I hear the words, âNot your house,â amongst it.
These magic words seem to bring an end to the chaos. Dad freezes with his fist raised in anticipation above Mattâs face. But now he stops. Suddenly, itâs my dadâs turn to look horrified.
I can virtually hear the wheels turning inside my fatherâs mind. With frightening speed, my dad now lifts a wincing Matt to his feet and forcefully marches him down the driveway.
He says something in a low voice to Matt before pushing him away. Matt disappears behind the hedge that blocks the country lane from view. Dad promptly turns back towards the house. His face is thunder. Iâve never been more afraid of my father than I am right now.
He storms past the bag of shopping he dropped with the shock of seeing my guest.
His key is shoved roughly into the lock. The front door is slammed, locking the two of us firmly inside together.
Then there is silence. An ominous horrible silence that I wish he would punctuate with shouting orders, or some kind of criticism. But thereâs nothing. Just the horrible quiet where Iâm left to wonder what on earth he will do next.
